In 2008, EMI, MTV and the Met Police donated the X-Mobile – a mobile recording studio created out of a police riot van – as part of MTV’s Pimp My Ride show.
Since then it has been working in schools, pupil referral units and on estates and has proven a fantastic way to engage young people in positive and educationally valuable activities.
The X-Mobile Project is an amazing youth work facility with state-of-the-art recording equipment. The van’s custom designed interior is split in two: the back section is a vocal and instrument recording booth complete with an M-Audio microphone and a Les Paul guitar.
The centre houses a Protools workstation hosted on Apple computer technology and two further work spaces with computers for writing lyrics and video editing. There is even an internal camera that allows those outside of the van to see what is going on inside on a plasma screen.
