Worldwide Welshman is the ‘solo project’ of Liam Rickard, singer-songwriter and artist from Betws-Y-Coed, now based in Machynlleth.
Since around 2015, Worldwide Welshman and his rotating lineups have been entertaining audiences in cafés, clubs, pubs, canal boats, restored sailing ships, squats, living rooms, community gardens and music festivals throughout Europe with their multi-lingual mix of tragi-comic folk-pop ballads, party-bangers, improvisations, folk songs from Wales and beyond, and comedic anecdotes.
His performances touch upon a diversity of themes including climate change, migration, mental health, cognitive dissonance, eco-renovation and space tourism, and draw on stories from his travels and a pan-global thali of musical influences.
Liam has collaborated with musicians from all over the world and has participated in quite a few international folk music exchange projects. He works regularly with his brother, Siôn, with whom he has a Welsh indie-folk band called Lo-fi Jones. Since moving to Machynlleth, Liam has popped up regularly on the Welsh language TV channel, S4C, in the programs Am Dro, Heno, Pnawn Da, Noson Lawen and Cân i Gymru. Liam is a regular in local trad sessions.
