Sorority Grrrls is a Riot Grrrl band, founded in Newcastle Upon Tyne in early 2022. They are inspired by the sounds of bands like Sleater-Kinney and Bikini Kill and are fueled by political and specifically feminist rage. They aim to bring the anger of ’90s riot grrrl into the 21st century, but hope to undo some of the less inclusive shortcomings of that scene, ensuring there is space for sista grrrls, riot ghouls and anyone else who wants to be involved.
Using their distinctive sound to convey important messages some people may find uncomfortable, they’ve written songs about anything from comedic stories featuring murderous sorority grrrls to songs about much more serious themes like abortion and trans rights. Featuring two guitars playing unconventional and fiddly riffs, aggressive bass, an unrelenting drummer and two singers they pride themselves in making as much noise as humanly possible in the most obnoxious, untrained way.
Sorority Grrrls have been playing gigs and (proudly) clearing rooms in and around Newcastle since August of 2022 when they played their first gig at the inclusive festival ‘Mousetival’ and despite being some of the youngest in the north east punk scene, they haven’t stopped since!
