10 years on from the release of her highly-acclaimed debut album Sing To The Moon, we are so excited to welcome stellar songwriter, composer and performer Laura Mvula to headline our Saturday night music bill.
Laura’s inimitable brand of classy, infectious retro-soul and jazz-infused pop gems were evident from the very beginning, in her breakthrough hit, Green Garden, and the albums that followed – The Dreaming Room and Pink Noise – only served to further underline her completely unique cross-genre approach.
Earning a Mercury Prize nomination for each of her three albums to date, as well as winning two MOBO awards and two Ivor Novello awards along the way, Laura is continually praised for her originality and innovation, while, at the same time, being compared to legendary musical figures like Nina Simone and David Axelrod – as well as winning the praise of fans the world over, including Elton John.
Truly a musicians’s musician, Laura is a graduate of the prestigious Royal Birmingham Conservatoire, with a degree in composition, and she has also received an Honorary Doctorate for her services to music from her alma mater, Birmingham City University. But she brings all that classical discipline and prestige to bear in creating joyful pop songs and she always pours herself into brilliant live performance.
As her song says, Laura was brought up a ‘Church Girl’. And although this is the first time she has graced our mainstage, it’s not the first time she’s been to Greenbelt. In fact, one of her favourite all-time gigs was seeing Eska play at the festival way back in the noughties.
We really can’t wait.
