Generation X and the search for meaning

With church attendances in dramatic decline, what are the key trends of twenty-first century spirituality? This session will look at the meaning of the term ‘Generation X’ for the contemporary search for meaning, as well as exploring the religious significance of popular culture (e.g. film, clubbing). The session will also explore whether mysticism could be the emerging spiritual movement of the new century.

Gordon Lynch runs the Centre for Practical Theology in the Department of Theology at Birmingham University. His book ‘After Religion’ was recently published by DLT, and his research has covered topics such as post-evangelicalism, the religious significance of film and ‘rave spirituality’.
