Why, in the world’s thirdbiggest democratic economy, are 250 million people denied their human rights? The caste system in India today.

Elephants are lovely things aren’t they? Strong, peaceful and serene, they are the perfect symbol of modern, post-colonial India. That is, until they smash whole villages, pillage crops and cause riots. But perhaps these contradictory images are symbolic of India too: a hugely advanced computing industry, the world’s third biggest democratic economy, yet millions living in slums or declared ‘untouchable.’ Here to sort out these elephantine problems, is theologian, minister, environmentalist and activist, Prem Mitra. From demonstrating how chillis and old rope are helping elephants and villagers become friends again, to the nationwide challenges of carbon emissions, this is one not to forget.
