Elephants are lovely things aren’t they? Strong, peaceful and serene, they are the perfect symbol of modern, post-colonial India. That is, until they smash whole villages, pillage crops and cause riots. But perhaps these contradictory images are symbolic of India too: a hugely advanced computing industry, the world’s third biggest democratic economy, yet millions living in slums or declared ‘untouchable.’ Here to sort out these elephantine problems, is theologian, minister, environmentalist and activist, Prem Mitra.
