Annie is an astronomer. She knows all about time and space, but she isn’t so sure about life and death. And she’s just gone deaf.
The Observatory is a new kind of opera that explores how sound can be translated or interpreted for deaf audiences, as well as how sound can be manipulated to speak to a hearing audience about the experience of deafness.
Based on the life of Annie Jump Cannon, it is about ways of hearing and the relationship between the Universe and ourselves. This performance is a concert version of a larger, multi-sensory musical experience.
An opera for people who can hear and people who can’t.
